Prominent Serbian human rights activist Biljana Kovacevic Vuco dies at 58

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) - Biljana Kovacevic Vuco, one of the most prominent Serbian human rights activist, has died. She was 58.
Kovacevic Vuco played an important role in Serbia's fledgling human rights and anti-war movement during the rule in the 1990s' of late strongman Slobodan Milosevic.
Serbia's human rights groups were a rare voice of opposition at the time against the ethnic bloodshed in the former Yugoslavia that was fomented by Milosevic's nationalism.
Kovacevic Vuco was also a prominent critic of Milosevic's autocratic policies at home.
As a legal expert, she headed an own YUCOM human rights group which offered legal assistance to the victims of abuse.
Kovacevic Vuco died Tuesday. She had two sons.
